Description: 'I feel the desire to renew myself, and to try to apologize for the fact that my pictures are after all almost a cry of anguish, although in the rustic sunflower they may symbolize gratitude.' -- letter W20 circa 20 February 1890 to Wil. Hoping to establish an artists' cooperative, Van Gogh rented a studio in Arles, the 'Yellow House,' and invited Gauguin to join him. In anticipation of his arrival, Vincent paints sunflowers to decorate Gauguin's room. Described as 'completely Vincent' by Gauguin, the flowers represent the sun, the dominant feature of the Provencal summer. Considered a remarkable draughtsman, Van Gogh's occupations included a salesman in an art gallery, a French tutor, a theological student, and an evangelist among the miners before becoming an artist.
